At a time when the right to read freely has become a political point of contention, the American documentary film 'THE LIBRARIANS' documents how American librarians have unexpectedly become the new frontline fighters for democracy and freedom of expression. In 2021 in Texas, the Krause List - with 850 titles about race and LGBTQIA+ - sparked a wave of book bans that is now spreading across the USThe film follows the librarians who refuse to bow down and who, despite harassment, threats and legislation aimed at their work, continue the fight for free access to knowledge and the right to read - as essential for a free society. Amid rising tensions, librarians uncover connections between local boards and more extreme forces driving the censorship movement It is revealed how the fight over books is actually about something much bigger: the control of ideas - and thus the control of the entire society.
