Artifacts from the Viking Age have often been interpreted as jewelry and are particularly associated with women’s clothing and adornment However, a new study, based on microscopic analyses of wear marks and damage on ten figurines from Viking-era Sweden, challenges this understanding. The studies show that the figurines were not merely worn as ornaments, but were also used in many different ways For example, one figure has been deliberately decapitated, others may have been passed down through generations, and some may have been hung up and displayed. Marianne Hem Eriksen, professor of Viking history at the National Museum of Denmark, is the lead author of the study.
