The baritone saxophone has rarely had soloists who have truly distinguished themselves as great and original voices. But one stands out clearly: Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996) In the beginning he was best known as an arranger, but after hitchhiking to the west coast of the United States in 1951 it was not long before he and his pianoless quartet became the "talk of the town" in Los Angeles and the surrounding area. The musically curious Mulligan later formed a long series of ensembles of varying sizes, usually without a piano, which he occasionally conducted himself. Whether he was leading smaller groups or his 12-piece Concert Jazz Band, his music was characterized by a beautiful, flowing melody, an often elastic, almost strolling rhythm - and an impressive array of captivating melodies.
