In 1830, the art historian NL Høyen arrived in Viborg and was quickly captivated by the city's old cathedral. The meeting between the influential Høyen and the large, medieval church building was the beginning of an ambitious restoration, which was initiated from 1863 onwards under the leadership of the architect NS Nebelong.The result, as we know it today, has since been criticized for being boring and lacking the nerve that characterizes the centuries-old architecture of the Middle Ages.But Viborg Cathedral is first and foremost a monument to the European architectural trends of the 19th century, which strove to recreate the past in a pure and unadulterated version. In the standing cathedral, the political and cultural-historical visions of the period melt together.
