Ole Rømer is today world-renowned as the discoverer of the hesitation of light; that is, that light has a speed. A discovery we can celebrate the 350th anniversary of this year. Like so many other groundbreaking discoveries, parts of the astronomical research community were initially not exactly thrilled with Rømer's discovery, while others, such as Newton, showed great enthusiasm. Today, after all, he is considered one of the most important figures in natural science and has written his name into the history books with other notable Danes such as Tycho Brahe, Steno, HC Ørsted and Niels Bohr. This evening we take a closer look at Rømer's groundbreaking discovery and what kind of quantity light really is. Is it particles or waves? And why is light so important to science?
