We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, but what is actually going on in the brain while we sleep? Sleep researcher Celia Kjærby takes us on a journey through the different sleep stages of the night, and why these stages are crucial for our memory, recovery and mental health. In the lecture we look at what characterizes good sleep, what factors can disrupt it, and what research actually says about how we can optimize our sleep in a busy everyday life. What do light, stress, caffeine, exercise and screen time really mean for the brain at night? Finally, we gain insight into Celia's own research, which examines the brain's natural wakefulness systems - the systems that help us be aware and respond to our surroundings. The systems not only keep us awake, but also play a central role in shaping the structure of sleep itself. How do imbalances in the systems affect our sleep quality? Celia Kjaerbyis a sleep researcher and associate professor at the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen. - Date: 18 November 2026 - Time: 19:00–20:30 - Venue: Gladsaxe Hovedbibliotek - Address: Søborg Hovedgade 220, Søborg, Denmark - Admission: From DKK 59
