By volcanologist Rikke Pedersen More than 30 active volcanic systems and earthquakes every day - that's everyday life in Iceland. But how do you monitor the volcanoes and can an eruption be predicted? Why do earthquakes occur daily in an otherwise peaceful country like Iceland? Why is the nature in Iceland so extremely different from all the other Nordic countries? And can you use those volcanoes for anything? We also touch on a series of volcanic eruptions that have devastated an area near the small fishing village of Grindavík, about 40 km from the capital Reykjavík, since 2023. What has happened and how is the situation being kept under control? Since underground melt movements and the formation of large cracks in the city streets in November 2023 caused the evacuation of the city, only very few people have chosen to return and live in the area.
