Free guided tour. The Glyptotek contains many sculptures of the human body - but what about the animals? The museum houses a collection of 34 animal sculptures by the French artist Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), and in the exhibition The Entry of the Animals they are shown in a new presentation. With Barye and the so-called animaliers, animals made their entrance as an independent motif in 19th-century art - no longer portrayed as symbols or a background for humans, but as individuals with their own character and expression. On the tour, we take a closer look at the 19th century's fascination with animals, and draw connections to the period's new scientific theories, the zoo in Paris, the emerging industrial agriculture and France's imperial expansion. The tour is free when the entrance fee to the museum is paid. Tour tickets cannot be pre-ordered, but can be picked up at the ticket office on the day. Tickets will not be issued to groups of more than five.
