I have a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and I am telling my story to break down stereotypes about the diagnosis. As I say; those of us with mental illness are not contagious, so we don't need to be so afraid of it. What am I telling you about? On my city walk, you will hear about my experiences as a psychiatric patient, which I first became when I was 17. At that time, there was great shame associated with being a psychiatric patient, and it was difficult for me to handle and accept that I had become one. After a stay in treatment groups, I felt better. I became a student and later qualified as a school teacher. I thought I was well - but I wasn't. I had an anxiety psychosis that lasted for more than a year, and today I am on early retirement. In psychiatry, you get a lot of medication. I'm not against that, but I've learned that it's not the medication that makes me healthy and happy - it's the one that keeps the symptoms away.
