Clear arcs and palpable pulse Samy Moussa's residency this season begins with the Dutch premiere of his Flute Concerto , composed partly commissioned by the ZaterdagMatinee. A richly nuanced, virtuosic work in which soloist Emmanuel Pahud is the driving force behind a broad, breathing orchestral sound. The flutist balances between acrobatic runs and long, lyrical lines, between chamber music intimacy and the frontal confrontation with the full orchestra. Samy Moussa studied in his native Montreal and continued his education in Europe. You can hear it. His works are both lyrical and monumental, with a North American directness rooted in European orchestral traditions. Nielsen & Brahms Carl Nielsen's Helios is an ode to the Greek sun.
