He was born and raised in a modest soldier's home in Småland and began his writing career as a village and folk poet. His main work is the four novels, the so-called "Emigrant Saga", which were published in the years 1949-1959. They are about Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson and the other small people from Småland, who emigrated to Minnesota in the middle of the last century. The themes in the novels revolve around the clash between the individual and the group, the small and the big world, the escape and homesickness, the past and the future.
