From Charlemagne to the first European

A historical lecture with Brian Patrick Mc Guire about Charlemagne, Europe's cultural roots and the first Europeans How did the first ideas about a common Europe arise? In this lecture, Professor Emeritus Brian Patrick Mc Guire (KU/RUC) takes as his starting point Charlemagne, who is often seen as the father figure of Europe. He gathered gifted men and women around him and allowed a common culture to find a place in his kingdom. Although Charlemagne's empire did not last long, Europe took shape again under Otto the Great. With the spread of the Christian church and culture - not least through the monastic orders - a foundation was laid for the first Europeans. Bernard of Clairvaux stands as a prominent representative of this development. The lecture is part of a series on European identity and provides historical perspectives on Europe's cultural roots.
