What to know

It's hard to understand that today I wouldn't sit down and pee in the public toilets where I used to sit and take heroin. People evolve and it must be said that I have too! What am I talking about? I grew up in a dysfunctional family and lived a childhood of fear. When I was placed in foster care at 15, I was so afraid of my father that I dyed my hair and slept with the covers over my head - hoping he wouldn't be able to find me. My teenage years were marked by many placements and great confusion. Eventually I ended up in a place with delinquent youth, where it felt like the system was giving up. I started doing a lot of cocaine and hanging out with people who pulled me deeper into a chaotic life, and before I knew it, I went from being a party junkie to smoking cocaine and later heroin. I slept in the night cafes at Mændenes Hjem, Reden and with changing boyfriends - I didn't have a home I could call my own.
