Exciting lecture about witch hunts in Denmark The fire is lit. It crackles and flames. A person is tied to a ladder. And when the fire burns hottest, the ladder is tossed into the fire. The condemned person is burned alive. This was the verdict for those who were called witches and had to suffer one of the most gruesome fates: being burned alive at the stake in front of a judging crowd. Witch hunts raged throughout Europe in the 17th century. In Denmark alone, over a thousand people, most of them women, were convicted and executed for practicing witchcraft. But what was it that people were actually afraid of? And how were ordinary people turned into witches?
