The relationship between China and Japan is a complex neighborhood of deep cultural history and fierce conflict. Historically, Japan was the cultural younger brother, adopting written language, architecture and philosophy from China. But in the 19th century, the balance of power shifted dramatically as a weakened China met a rapidly modernizing and imperialistic Japan. The 20th century was the darkest chapter. Japan's brutal occupation of China and the Nanjing Massacre left deep historical wounds that today are a central part of China's national identity and a constant reminder to never again be weak. Today, the relationship is a paradox: The countries are economically deeply dependent on each other, but politically divided. Territorial disputes in the East China Sea and Japan's military alliance with the United States create constant tensions. It is a fragile balance, where distrust and trade live side by side, while both nations struggle to set the agenda for a new world order.
